In January 2015, two masked brothers stormed the editorial office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris and opened fire. Twelve people were shot dead in the attack for which the terrorist network al-Qaeda took the blame. Millions of French people demonstrated in support of the newspaper and a polarized debate on the limits of freedom of expression and the position of satire gained momentum.
