Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli in "Le Mépris" by Jean-Luc Godard -

NANA PRODUCTIONS / SIPA

  • Four films by Jean-Luc Godard are now available on Netflix.

  • The New Wave Pope has created a new way of making films, breaking free from the studios.

  • Disruption, romance, humor, Jean-Luc Godard has everything to please the younger generations.

After François Truffaut, a monster of French cinema has landed on Netflix.

Jean-Luc Godard arrives on the streaming giant with four cult works this Tuesday:

Breathless

(1960),

Le Mépris

(1963),

Alphaville

(1965) and

Détective

(1985).

The opportunity for moviegoers to (re) see these treasures of French cinema but also for the young generation to discover a radical cinema made up of mise en abyme, winks and irreverence.

While the New Wave Pope's films could confuse more than one, we have concocted a little “Netflix” manual to allow the youngest to enter without (too much) difficulty.

More cult than "House of cards"

What an idea to compare

House of Cards

and

Le Mépris

.

Don't panic, we won't fall into heresy.

If certain punchlines of the political series carried by Kevin Spacey remain in mind ["Let the butchery begin";

“The path to power is paved with hypocrisies and corpses.

But never regret ”], no work of fiction can compare with the iconic opening scene of Brigitte Bardot naked on the bed alongside Michel Piccoli.

"And my butt, do you like my butt?"

», Asks the star of the 1960s, uttering a line that will go down in the annals of the seventh art.

As poetic as it is unforgettable.

More romantic than "The kissing booth"

Lovers of romances whose catalog of Netflix abounds, between

The Kissing Booth

,

The perfect date

and

To all the boys

, will not be disappointed to enter the intimacy of the couple Bardot-Piccoli, in Capri, in Italy.

From the passion of the first days to contempt, there is only one step that Camille takes unfortunately, interpreted by BB.

Misunderstandings, tearing, the spectator witnesses the descent into hell of a romantic relationship.

As desperate as it is romantic, this cinematic nugget does not get old.

Passion has no age ...

More thrilling than "Mindhunter"

There is never really a question of psychopath, nor of serial killers at Jean-Luc Godard, unlike the earthy

Mindhunter

.

But, with his grandiose

Breathless

, the filmmaker offers a pastiche of film noir freely inspired by a news item.

First feature film of the monster of the cinema, it brings to the screen an unforgettable duo composed of Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg who takes us on a legendary chase in the streets of Paris and Marseille.

All the ingredients are already present: improvisations, live sound recording, natural lights, handheld camera… No need to rub shoulders with serial killers to be carried away by this run of unusual energy.

More disruptive than "Dark"

If you like to get lost in stories, remember that Godard's cinema, in his time, created a real revolution.

The New Wave Pope has nothing to envy of

Dark's

convoluted storyline

.

From his first opus, he freed himself from studio rules to create a new way of making cinema.

He blows a wind of freedom on the industry, offering resolutely disruptive works (in their time).

Mise en abyme, winks, humor, literary references, the filmmaker refuses nothing on the content, nor on the form and explodes the frames of the story.

If with all that, you do not dive with your eyes closed (so to speak) in this work, there is nothing more we can do ...
