The goal, which was set in 2016, was that half of the Swedish films would have a female director or screenwriter by 2020. Since then, the number of female directors has averaged 30 percent.

At the Cannes Film Festival 2018, Anna Serner threatened that if the industry did not help achieve the goal of half women behind the camera by 2020, the film institute would earmark the 2020 grant money to only female applicants.

The presentation of this autumn's films shows only 4 out of 21 female directors.

According to Anna Serner, the figure will land on about 43 percent women by the end of the year.

But despite the fact that the gender equality goal has not been reached, the threat from 2018 will not become a reality.
