  • SNCF traffic remains very disturbed in the South West after a series of incidents this Sunday.
  • The company announces “exceptional” compensation measures for the situation.
  • The return to normal is expected at best for Tuesday. An internal investigation is underway to determine the origin of this mess.

It's called missing your return to school. SNCF has had to manage an "extremely complicated" situation in the South West since Saturday after a series of "exceptional" incidents on its network. Thousands of travelers have been affected this past weekend back from vacation. Some even spent the night in their train. The management made an update on the situation on Monday.

  • 8,000 to 10,000 travelers impacted

This Monday, at Bordeaux station, many travelers are still wondering how they will reach Paris. SNCF traffic remains extremely disturbed after a difficult weekend: “There was surely a first incident in Orthez on a catenary and the train damaged the line for several kilometers. Behind, it is the snowball effect with a series of exceptional events which caused interruptions ”, explains Jean-Luc Gary, the territorial director. In all, around ten trains, or “8,000 to 10,000 people”, according to Jérôme Attou, the head of the crisis unit, were affected by these incidents.

Nearly 500 travelers, for example, were taken care of at Hendaye station overnight from Sunday to Monday by civil protection. "For the moment, it is too early to say if it is due to a lack of maintenance, we have just launched an internal investigation", insists Jean-Luc Gary.

  • 300% compensation

Who says exceptional situation, says exceptional measures: “We have decided to reimburse travelers at 300%. That is to say, they are reimbursed for their train ticket and also offered two free tickets. All ancillary costs will also be covered by the company (hotels, taxis, meals, etc.), ”explains Jérôme Attou. For that, it will be necessary to present its invoices.

In the meantime, travelers are currently being transported by bus to Bordeaux where they can take a TGV to Paris during the day. Nearly 200 agents are mobilized in the field to help users.

  • All trains must be checked

The return to normal is not expected for the next few hours. At best, it will be Tuesday. “We need to check all the trains that have been in this area. The first checks on the lines will begin this Monday afternoon. The objective is to recirculate the trains as quickly as possible but the area to be assessed is very large, ”recalls Jean-Luc Gary.
