The coronavirus pandemic will not have got the better of the MTV Video Music Awards. The 2020 edition was indeed held Sunday evening in New York, outdoors, mixing performances of artists across the city and sequences on a green background.

This very special ceremony was notably marked by the numerous victories of the K-Pop group BTS, which left with four awards (including "best group" and "best pop video"). She also holder of four trophies, Lady Gaga, crowned "artist of the year", ensured the show with a string of crazy masks.

At the masked ball

Encouraging viewers to wear a mask to protect themselves and others, the singer herself wore different models throughout the evening, each one crazier than the next. Lady Gaga started the ceremony with a bubble mask before adopting a very “Mad Max girly” look. Viewers were also able to discover other creations such as the Darth Vader mask or the disco mask.

Another highlight of the evening, the singer performed a performance of more than nine minutes by performing different pieces from her latest album Chromatica . She also shared the stage with Ariana Grande for Rain on Me , a duet track that won several awards, including “song of the year” and “best collaboration”.

The return of the big ball

Another singer also made an impression on Sunday in New York. Named 14 times, Miley Cyrus took the stage to perform her latest single  Midnight Sky, from her upcoming album She Is Miley Cyrus . And in order to end her number in style, the artist climbed on a giant mirror ball, a glamorous nod to the video for Wrecking Ball in 2013, where she rode a wrecking ball in her underwear.

"Justice for Jacob Blake, justice for Breonna Taylor"

In a very different register, the performance of The Weeknd was also very noticed. After performing  Blinding Lights (whose clip was crowned “video of the year”), at the top of a 200-meter tower, the artist sent a concise but committed message. "It's really hard for me to celebrate this and enjoy this moment, so I'm just going to say justice for Jacob Blake, justice for Breonna Taylor," he said as he picked up his award.
