Earlier this week, Jean-Michel Blanquer, the Minister of National Education unveiled the measures taken, in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic, for the start of the school year.

From wearing a mask to running the canteen or recreation, 20 Minutes answers the practical questions you ask yourself.

  • Who returns to class on Tuesday?

All students, or some 12.4 million schoolchildren, middle and high school students. The 866,000 teachers will have made their pre-school day the day before. The school is “compulsory”, insisted the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer.

  • Will parents be allowed to enter the classes?

Traditionally, in kindergarten, parents can accompany their children to classes on the first day of school. "The principle is to avoid contact between adults as much as possible, as we do in the rest of social life," warned Jean-Michel Blanquer, while suggesting that they would be all the same. allowed to do so. On this subject like others, he called on school leaders to "show pragmatism".

  • Will teachers have to wear a mask?

All teachers will be required to wear a mask, which will be provided to them by the Ministry of Education. Professors who are vulnerable or in contact with people at risk can apply for FFP2 masks.

To facilitate learning, in kindergarten or in first grade for example, “transparent masks” could be distributed to teachers over the next few days. Teachers in charge of hearing-impaired children will also be concerned.

  • What about the students?

All middle and high school students will have to wear a mask. Several communities have promised that they will provide free to these students, after the refusal of the state to take care of them. In primary and kindergarten, it is not necessary to wear a mask for children, but they can be equipped if they wish.

  • What about recess or the canteen?

Students over 11 years old will have to wear their mask during recess. Both outdoors and in the classroom, limiting student mixing should be “sought as far as possible”. Recess times will be organized, as far as possible, in such a way as to limit crossings between groups of pupils.

In the canteen, the students wear the mask while they are traveling. The ministry recommends adapting “the time slots and the number of services” so as to “limit flows and occupancy density”. "It lacks clear rules on everything that happens outside the classroom," regrets Sophie Vénétitay, of Snes-FSU, the first secondary school union. “For example, at the library, can we let a student borrow a book that has just been returned?” She asks.

  • How will sport and music take place?

Wearing a mask is not possible during physical practice, specifies the ministry. On the other hand, it will take a distance of “at least two meters” between students, “except when the nature of the practice does not allow it”.

In music education, wearing a mask remains compulsory from middle school. "The quality of the timbre, the accuracy, the expression will be worked on without seeking vocal power," said the ministry.

  • What happens if a student has a fever?

If a child or staff is symptomatic, testing will be done. This in order to "go up the chain of contamination to take isolation measures".

The stated goal of the ministry is to be able to "respond within 48 hours whenever symptoms are reported" to test everyone who has been in contact.

  • What if a class or school has to close?

The decision will be taken after a joint decision by the rectors, prefects and regional health authorities. "There will be, but as little as possible," said Jean-Michel Blanquer in the JDD.

The minister says he is "ready" to relaunch distance education if necessary. And if schools were to restrict their reception capacities, the objective is to guarantee families support in class or via other devices (study, cultural and sports activities, etc.).
