  • Coronavirus: Why are there fewer admitted for covid-19 despite the increase in cases?

One more day in which the infections accelerate and reach 10,000 again. The report updated this Friday by the Ministry of Health registers 9,779 new cases since yesterday, 121 more than on Thursday. Thus, people infected by coronavirus in Spain since the start of the pandemic amount to 439,286.

The almost 10,000 positives is the result of adding both the PCR tests carried out yesterday, as well as those of previous days, whose result has been made known in the last 24 hours. In this sense, 3,829 have been confirmed cases that have undergone PCR on the last day (the previous day 3,781). Most of them are concentrated in Madrid (1,153); the Basque Country (730); and Andalusia (401).

Regarding people hospitalized in the last week, Health has reported 1,693, 86 more than on Thursday, when 1,607 were counted. In the last 24 hours, 958 infected have been admitted (922 in the preceding day). Madrid continues to be the community that accumulates the most income in the last seven days (503), followed by Andalusia (254) and Valencia (151).

In addition, 129 patients have been transferred to the ICU in the same period of time and, on the other hand, 39 new ones have been added to the total. In this way, there are already 12,245 infected who have entered this hospital unit since the arrival of the pandemic. Likewise, 689 patients have been discharged in the last hours.

Admissions to the intensive care unit have almost tripled in the last two weeks . Specifically, between August 7 and 14, official figures revealed 46 transfers to this unit. Instead, today's report numbers 129 patients admitted to the ICU. Therefore, it has gone from an average of between six and seven seriously ill patients a day to just over 18 in recent days. The most surprising changes come from the Canary Islands, which from adding 3 patients to this hospital unit in the week of August 14, has increased to 21 in recent days . Valencia, for its part, has gone from 5 to 15; and the Balearic Islands, from 2 to 13.

Regarding the care capacity of hospitals, the report reports that, on average, the percentage of occupied beds nationwide is 6% (yesterday 5%). The regions with the most occupation are Madrid, with 14%; Aragon, with 13%; and the Basque Country, with 10%.

15 new deaths

The official count has also reported 15 new deaths, so that the total number of deaths from the virus in our country now stands at 29,011. Of course, Health has not yet included in this figure deaths in residences or those who presented symptoms compatible with Covid-19, but who did not undergo the PCR test. With a death date in the last week, 129 deaths have been reported.

Almost half of them correspond to Madrid, which registers 53; Andalusia, 16; Valencia, 11; and Castilla y León, 10. For its part, Galicia reports seven; the Basque Country, six; Balearic and Canary Islands, of five; Catalonia, four; and Castilla La Mancha and Murcia, of three. Finally, Extremadura and La Rioja have notified two; and Asturias and Navarra, one. Aragon, Cantabria, Ceuta and Melilla have not counted any deaths.

At the European level, Spain continues to be the second European country with the most infections since the start of the pandemic (439,286), only behind Russia (975,576). Likewise, the United Kingdom and Italy follow, with 330,368 and 263,948, respectively. The country with the highest number of deaths continues to be the United Kingdom (41,477), followed by Italy (35,463) and France (30,576).

In addition, Spain continues to lead the large European countries with the highest cumulative incidence (AI) of the virus, with 189 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days (on Tuesday 183). This is more than double that of the second country with the most AI: France, which is ahead of Romania with an incidence of 70.9 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last two weeks (seven days ago this figure was 51). Romania, where this figure is progressively decreasing, is in third place, with 70.3 (a week ago 73.6).
