The Peta association, which campaigns for animal rights, awarded a resident of Nîmes (Gard) a prize for having saved in extremis, last July, a dog from a car parked in the sun.

"Having heard the moans of an elderly dog, confined in a transport crate and left alone in a car parked in the sun, Nathalie Ott did not hesitate to act to save the life of the animal", rejoices the association, which awarded him a “heroes' prize for animals”.

A dog can succumb in minutes

Peta recalls that under no circumstances should a dog be left locked in a parked car, in the sun or not, as the animal can die of heat stroke in just a few minutes. "When it's 26 degrees, the temperature inside a car in the shade can be 32 degrees, and the interior of a car parked in the sun can reach 70 degrees in just a few minutes," continues the association. Dogs can die quickly if their body temperature rises above 41 degrees. This endangers their liver and their ability to control their muscles, their brain may be irreversibly damaged, and their heart may stop beating. "

If you see a dog in distress in a car, the association recommends taking the vehicle model and color, as well as the license plate number, and calling the police, then trying to locate the owner. of the car, if possible, making sure that "someone is keeping an eye on the animal to assess the urgency of the situation".

"If the police do not intervene or do not arrive in time and the dog's life appears to be in imminent danger, surround yourself with one or more witnesses who can confirm your assessment of the situation, then proceed to release the dog. animal suffering from the vehicle, transport it to the shade and wait for the arrival of the police, ”says Peta, who then recommends cooling the animal by making water available,“ and applying a wet and cold towel on the head and chest, or by immersing it gradually in lukewarm water ”.
