Former Minister of Justice Katsuyuki Kawai and his wife, Representative Kagoto, alleged innocence in the first trial of a large-scale takeover case over the House of Councilors election last year.

The former Minister of Justice Katsuyuki Kawai (57) said that in order to win the election of his wife, Senri, in the House of Councilors election last year, 100 people including local lawmakers and executives from the supporters' group were given over 29 million yen in public office election law. He was accused of the acquisition of the violation, and the House of Councilors Defendant Sato (46) was also accused of distributing 1.7 million yen to the five local lawmakers.
