Several displays were subject to the appreciation of onlookers this Tuesday - F. Binacchi / ANP / 20 Minutes

  • Pathways from the coast to "refuges" will be installed by next summer, announces the town hall.
  • This Tuesday, visitors were invited to give their opinion on several displays.

“Tsunamis in Cannes? Can it really happen? “Seeing the stickers affixed to the asphalt of the city of festivals this Tuesday, this holidaymaker from Morbihan was frankly worried. But, yes, "the risk does exist", recalls the mayor of the city, the first in metropolitan France to experiment with evacuation signage in the event of devastating waves. "An underwater landslide near the Algerian coast could cause waves of 3 m here", argues David Lisnard (LR).

Throughout the day, the municipality collected the opinions of onlookers on different types of displays, which will then be installed on several axes of the city, leading from the coast to “refuges”, in the event of an alert.

Safe "more than 5 m from sea level"

"A mapping will be established so that everyone can know where these areas are located, more than 5 m from sea level, the closest", specifies Yannick Ferrand, director of forecasting and major risk management at Cannes City Hall. The route tested on Tuesday started from the Old Port of Cannes and ended at the SNCF station in the city center, identified as one of the city's refuges. Le Suquet, the oldest part of the city, in height, "will also be one of the recommended areas", indicates this official.

Strongly mobilized on risk prevention, especially since the deadly floods of 2015, the city of Cannes had already organized an evacuation exercise in the event of a tsunami warning in 2018. “According to specialists, an earthquake at sea would cause a devastating wave for the coast, in particular because it would be formed by many eddies with many currents, adds David Lisnard. People on the beaches, but also boaters in the ports would be on the front lines. "

Waves up to 4 m in places

On October 16, 1979, the Côte d'Azur was hit by a tsunami. That day, a wave caused by land subsidence on a construction site south of Nice airport killed eleven people.

According to expert Laurie Boschetti from the Geoazur laboratory, the Côte d'Azur is exposed to risk and in particular because of the Ligurian fault located between 20 and 30 km from the coast, which stretches over 80 km in length facing Italy. . With a total rupture of this fault, the waves could reach 4 m in places, she explained at the end of last year at 20 Minutes .
