  • It has become a recurring criticism against certain political figures: the lack of health precautions taken during public events, in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic.
  • Jean-Luc Mélenchon thus found himself accused of not respecting the barrier gestures with the militants of rebellious France (LFI) on the occasion of a party rally.
  • But the photo in question dates from 2016, and the various images of the summer school of La France insoumise, Sunday, August 24, show that social distancing with the public was respected by the various parties involved in the party.

No doubt, the political start has indeed taken place: just observe the very contrasting reactions to the speech delivered by Jean-Luc Mélenchon near Valence (Drôme), Sunday, August 24, at the end of the summer university of France rebellious (LFI), to be convinced.

While LFI activists greeted his intervention with enthusiasm, supporters of other parties strongly criticized the alleged non-compliance with anti-Covid-19 health measures on this occasion.

“France Insoumise, this cluster…”, “failing to launch a popular rebellion, is Mélenchon trying to start a new Covid cluster? No mask. No distancing ”, were offended by the messages published on social networks, accompanied by a photo of Jean-Luc Mélenchon on a platform, quite close to the public. The absence of masks among the spectators is also surprising.

But the snapshot in question - initially posted by a Twitter user who deleted it after acknowledging his mistake - is misleading since it dates from a meeting organized ... in 2016.

FAKE OFF

This photo had indeed been taken by the photographer Rémy Gabalda in Toulouse, on August 28, 2016, during a meeting of the leader of rebellious France, a few months before the presidential election of 2017. It was found in particular in illustration of 'an article in Le Parisien devoted to this event.

A certain distance between the stage and the audience

If Jean-Luc Mélenchon also wore a white shirt, Sunday August 24 in Drôme, the platform on which he was located was located at a certain distance from the public, as can be seen on an aerial view of this gathering of approximately 2,000 people (bottom right below).

We did not ask to nationalize everything! We asked to nationalize very specific companies: #Luxfer for medical oxygen, #Famar for drugs. #JLMValence # AMFiS2020 https://t.co/DECqmPdkiY pic.twitter.com/ld9TTKmmuz

But also in the first seconds of the live filmed on this occasion, at 1'10 or 5'08 in particular.

"Keep the mask on"

The latter also shows that Jean-Luc Mélenchon wore his mask well during his passage in the middle of the public (from 20'24 when he stops near a spectator), before taking it off shortly. after arriving on the platform, after having greeted the other speakers with a check or an arm resting on the shoulder. “I take off the mask. No, but it's just for the convenience of speech eh, be serious, keep it since it's the agreement that has been passed, both with the town hall, with the State, the prefecture, which we will respect. We respect the rules ”, he explains on this occasion (at 21'21).

The members of LFI who preceded him on the platform had, like him, removed their masks before their speech, after the deputy Mathilde Panot recalled in the preamble: "I want to remind everyone that we must keep your mask on and keep the physical distance between us so that there is no contamination. "

These health instructions, clearly observed by members of the public visible on the video, were finally the subject of a dedicated page in the event program.
