There are still many doubts to be solved about the “odorous gas” incident at Wutong Bridge in Leshan.

Since 8 am on the 20th, many residents have issued documents claiming that there is a pungent odor in the air in Wutongqiao District, Leshan City. For a time, news about the "chemical plant explosion" spread quickly, triggering panic among residents, and some people "escaped" through various means.

On the same day, the official Weibo of Wutongqiao District of Leshan City continuously refuted rumors that no explosion or leakage occurred in the chemical plant in the district, and no excessive gas was found. Regarding the cause of the "irritating gas", the local said it is still investigating further.

Official Weibo refutes rumors three times

At 8 am on the 20th, Ms. Wang, who lives in Zhugen Town, Wutongqiao District, Leshan City, opened the window on the second floor and smelled a pungent smell in the air.

Ms. Wang recalled to a reporter from the Beijing News that she felt very stinky at the time, but she "can't describe what it was."

Soon, some neighbors began to pack their luggage and prepare to leave. Some people say that it was a chemical industry explosion, and the air was poisonous. So, Ms. Wang immediately closed all doors and windows in her home, put on a mask, and took the elderly and children to Meishan by car.

At this time, many local residents began posting videos and pictures, asking each other about the source of the pungent smell.

In the picture, there is a photographer who is outside, surrounded by fog on the surface of the river and along the river bank, "however the smoke is heavy, I can't see it everywhere".

A resident told a reporter from the Beijing News, "This white is different from winter fog, with a little light blue."

The official Weibo of Wutongqiao District of Leshan City issued three consecutive notices at 9:56, 10:37, and 12:55.

The report stated that the environmental protection department had initiated emergency monitoring on the occurrence of pungent odors along the Yongsi River in Wutongqiao District, Leshan City at about 8 am. "There were no hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, chlorine, ammonia, VOCs ( Volatile organic compounds) and other indicators exceed the standard."

Many claims, including the "chemical plant explosion", were falsified by the official Weibo Weibo Wutongqiao of Wutongqiao District.

For example, the so-called "dense smoke between buildings" pictures were confirmed to be news pictures issued by a polysilicon company in Wutongqiao District in 2015 when a leak occurred.

Starting in the morning, Zhang Guoqing, the secretary of the district party committee, went to the chemical company to inspect, and then released a video on the spot, denying any abnormalities were found.

Zhang Guoqing stated that “no one company exploded” in the entire Wutongqiao District. After Leshan Environmental Monitoring Center Station and Wutongqiao Ecological Environment Bureau carried out emergency monitoring, none of the monitoring indicators had exceeded the standard data; after the full coverage self-examination, none was found Any leakage and other abnormal, safety and environmental protection phenomena, and no personal injury report has been received.

"Now we are carrying out water and gas sampling and monitoring, further comprehensive and in-depth investigations, and continuous monitoring work. Now the social order in Wutongqiao District is normal, I hope that everyone will not believe in rumors or spread rumors." Zhang Guoqing said.

  Local residents "flee"

Several chemical companies in Wutongqiao District issued statements stating that everything is normal.

This morning, the official website of Yongxiang Co., Ltd. issued a statement stating that since the flood receded on August 19, 2020, its related units have entered the stage of comprehensive clean-up and cleaning. At present, all equipment and installations are normal and safe, and there is no abnormal situation such as leakage.

Sichuan Fuhua Tongda Pesticide Technology Co., Ltd. and Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology Co., Ltd. also issued a statement stating, "All equipment and installations are normal and safe, and no abnormalities have occurred."

A staff member of the Yongxiang Polysilicon Plant said that he saw smoke in the plant this morning but did not smell any peculiar smell. The above-mentioned staff denied that the "gas" was related to the factory. "We have always worked in the company, and there have been no problems in the factory."

However, panic is still spreading, and the "poisonous gas leak" argument is still spreading.

Resident Mr. Liu told the Beijing News that at about 10 am, there was a traffic jam on the street in front of the door. "Old and young people walk and some drive cars", all evacuating towards Leshan City. Many pedestrians hurried past with their luggage. They wore masks because they were worried that the white fog in the air would be harmful to their health.

"Another worker in overalls told me to hurry up," Mr. Liu said. The traffic jam lasts for about two or three hours, usually only 20 minutes, and it takes about an hour to walk by himself.

Even people who did not smell the smell were walking out.

Ms. Yu, the owner of a fishing tackle shop, told the Beijing News reporter that at 9 o'clock this morning, she heard from neighbors and family members that there was a “gas leak”. Relatives who lived in Leshan City specially drove over. After experiencing a traffic jam for more than an hour , Send the family to Leshan. "I came back at noon, and I haven't smelled anything yet."

Several residents of Zhonglou Street told the Beijing News reporter that the pungent smell in the air did not dissipate until 13:00 in the afternoon.

At that time, "Weibo Wutongqiao" released 9 pictures with the text "Wutongqiao at this moment". In the picture, the sky is clear and the road vision is clear.

  Is it "normal pressure relief"?

The Beijing News reporter noticed that as early as the 18th, some local residents reported smelling a pungent smell.

According to Ms. Wang, she also smelled a pungent odor at noon on the 18th, which was a "very faint smell" that lasted about 2 minutes. But Ms. Wang didn't pay much attention because she was busy dealing with the flood.

Another resident, Ms. Yang, told a reporter from the Beijing News that on the evening of the 18th, the smell of gas in the air was sour, the respiratory tract was obviously painful, and the eyeballs were astringent and sore.

On the 18th, Wutongqiao District once notified the incident, saying that after the Wutongqiao District Emergency Management and Ecological Environment Department on-site investigation, no enterprise combustion, explosion and leakage were found. “Netizens reported the cause of the smoke, which is a normal pressure relief for the safety system of Yongxiang. "

A staff member of the Yongxiang Polysilicon Plant explained to a reporter from the Beijing News that all chemical plants will normally release the pressure and discharge excess water vapor without releasing any toxic and harmful gases or odors.

But Ms. Yang questioned the term "normal pressure relief", "Why is the usual pungent smell not so strong?"

More questions need to be resolved. What kind of substance is the pungent smell and "smoke" in the air, and where is the source? A reporter from the Beijing News applied for an interview to the relevant departments of Wutongqiao District on this basis, and has not yet received a reply.

Among the evacuated residents, some have returned home, while others are still watching.

On the evening of the 20th, Mr. Liu, a resident of Zhonglou Street, told the Beijing News that many neighbors in the vicinity had not returned since they evacuated in the morning. Ms. Wang is currently in her hometown and does not intend to return to Wutongqiao immediately. "Look at the situation first."
