Security experts warn Tiktok, but not Facebook. Yet they do not differ much.

- The difference between Facebook and Tiktok is marginal from my point of view. They collect huge amounts of data, says David Lindahl, research engineer at FOI.

But there are some areas that make Tiktok a cloud of concern for experts. The app has been pointed out by several countries for having very close ties with the Chinese intelligence service. Chinese legislation provides far-reaching opportunities to access whatever data they want, Lindahl says.

Hidden Hong Kong protests

It has also emerged that Tiktok has previously censored video clips for certain users if it is the case that the clips may be perceived as problematic. It can be about showing disabilities or various sexual orientations, but there have also been limited videos from the protests in Hong Kong and discussions about how the minority group Uighurs are treated in China.

The big problem with this type of classification is that users do not know it exists, Lindahl says:

- You think your clips are shown, but in fact no one, or few, see them. This enables regimes to, for example, politically control the supply that exists and influence people's opinions in a very subtle way.

"We are the product"

Lindahl believes that it is also important to understand the purpose of social media. The business model is not just fun clips.

- These companies do not exist for them to provide us with entertainment. They exist to collect data from us so that they can sell ads. We are the product, and we are sold in exchange for entertainment, he says.

You can ask Tiktok to delete all data about you - but the information will still not disappear from the internet.

- It is not just data that Tiktok has stored. They have sent this to many different companies which store it in turn, says Lindahl.
