"This week, we had three days with more than 200 passages, against 160 on average during the year, it is a lot", explains Christian Brice, emergency doctor and regional delegate of the Association of emergency physicians of France (Amuf ). “We have been working with a significant lack of beds during the summer for years, but the Covid has made things worse,” he denounces. “On Monday, eighteen patients slept on stretchers in the corridors when we know that we are less monitoring these patients because there is no dedicated staff,” continues Christian Brice.
Management recognizes "saturation" this week
Questioned by AFP, the management of the establishment did not comment on the strike movement. She recognizes a "saturation" of the establishment this week, with "225 emergency visits on Monday". "We issued a press release calling on the population to go to the emergency room only in case of necessity," explains Hélène Colas, deputy director.
“We have more difficulties in surgery, because these are quite heavy cases that require longer stays. Suddenly there are fewer beds for hospitalization from the emergency room, ”she adds, while refuting the closure of beds since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. “There are additional beds that we put in departments from time to time and that we neutralized during the crisis. But we reactivated seven of them this week to cope with the peak of activity, ”she explains.
