A 69-year-old man died last Tuesday at the Salamanca Clinic Hospital due to Crimea-Congo fever, after being bitten by a tick that, as confirmed on Thursday by the Ministry of Health of Castilla y León, would have suffered the first week of August.

The patient had been admitted to the ICU last Monday, after attending the Hospital Nuestra Señora del Castañar , in Béjar , due to the worsening of "nonspecific symptoms, which days before he had referred in a home consultation and for which he was undergoing treatment", according to the press release of the Ministry.

Once samples of the man were sent from the Hospital Clínico de Salamanca, the National Microbiology Center of Majadahonda (Madrid) , dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute, has confirmed the presence of Crimean Congo virus in the patient, who died on August 11, one day after entering the emergency room.

This is the second case affected by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in the province of Salamanca, after last June it was known that a middle-aged man was admitted to the emergency room of the Salamanca Clinic Hospital after having been infected by the bite of a tick in a pine forest area.

Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever is caused by a virus that is transmitted from the bite of a tick, of the genus 'Hyalomma' , although it can also be transmitted by contact with the blood or fluids of the patient between people.

In the case of the Salamanca patient, the health workers observed, upon entering the Clinic, "a blackish lesion on one of his legs , in view of what his family environment refers to as having seen him remove a tick the week before," added the Ministry of Health.

For this reason, from Public Health and in coordination with the healthcare field, the protocol of action and coordination between the national and regional health authorities was put into place, with the sending of the analytics that have given positive results to the Crimean-Congo fever , as well as with the adoption of protection measures for healthcare professionals.

In addition, the patient's contacts have been identified to indicate the follow-up to be carried out, such as a periodic monitoring of body temperature and to notify their reference epidemiologist of any change in their health status.
