On August 13th, 71-year-old paper-cut artist Kang Zhanjie displayed his paper-cut work "Nine-Nine Old Man Picture" at the Xisannei Painting Museum in Hebei. According to Kang Zhanjie, this 38-meter-long paper-cut work took him 87 days to complete. The work contains 108 kittens of various shapes and 12 butterflies, so it is also called "Hundred Cats". Kang Zhanjie said that cats, butterflies and elders are homophonic, so he named his work "Nine-Nine Elders" to express a good wish for health and longevity. Kang Zhanjie is one of the first batch of folk arts and crafts masters in Hebei Province and has been engaged in paper-cut creation for more than 50 years. On the basis of inheriting the tradition, his paper-cutting skills have formed a personalized style, which is called "paper-cutting people" by the industry. (Ai Guangde and Zhai Yujia)
