Twelve people were slightly injured on Monday, two of whom were taken to hospital, after a cabin of the funicular in Lourdes (Hautes-Pyrénées) suddenly stopped following a power cut following a violent storm, we learned from the firefighters.

“There was a power cut after a lightning strike causing the funicular to stop. The cabin which was coming down with 27 occupants had an abrupt stop with an immediate restart. Of the 27 people, 15 are unharmed including a three-month-old baby, 12 slightly injured including two evacuated to the hospital in Lourdes ”, the same source added. Lightning did not fall on the funicular.

The two slightly more seriously injured people - a 56-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman - constitute "relative emergencies" and their prognosis is not threatened. The funicular connects the city of Lourdes, the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in France, to the Pic du Jer (951 meters) over a length of just over a kilometer.
