• Wakashio: An oil spill reaches the paradisiacal coast of the island of Mauritius
  • Environment: An oil pump in the waters of the Red Sea

Thousands of people arrived this Sunday on the southeast coast of Mauritius to participate in their protection against the approaching oil spill from the ship Wakashio , which ran aground on a reef a hundred meters from the coast.

"People have understood that they had to take matters into their own hands to protect fauna and flora," Ashok Subron , an environmental activist from the neighboring city of Maheburg, told AFP.

Hundreds of volunteers were trying to weave floating hemp and fabric barriers to limit the layer of fuel escaping from the ship stranded on a reef off Pointe d'Esny, not far from Mauritius International Airport. Others, covered in fuel and grease, wearing rubber gloves and masks, tried to retrieve with buckets the products that the ship allowed to escape.

Between 1,000 and 4,000 tons of fuel transported by the Wakashio have already been dumped into the sea, Akihiko Ono , vice president of Mitsui OSK Lines, who operated the ship, told the press , belonging to a Japanese company that sails under the Panamanian flag.

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth , who declared a "state of environmental emergency" , called for a crisis meeting of the competent authorities this Sunday. Japan announced the dispatch of a team of six experts to work alongside French and local relief teams .

The Mauritian police have planned to enter the Wakashio this Sunday with the captain of the ship - a 58-year-old Indian - to recover the documents on his navigation and the recordings of the communications. The twenty members of the ship's crew were able to leave the ship safely after the accident on 25 July.
