Decontamination soil Demonstration project to grow vegetables without covering the soil Fukushima Iikan 22:34 on August 7th

In a demonstration project conducted in Iitate Village, Fukushima Prefecture after the nuclear power plant accident, to confirm whether or not soil decontaminated can be reused on farmland, the Ministry of the Environment newly added vegetables without covering uncontaminated soil. We have decided on a policy to raise and check if there are any problems with safety.

After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, of the soil from the decontamination carried out in Fukushima Prefecture, if the concentration of radioactive substances was below a certain level, the Ministry of the Environment will reuse it on agricultural land. Since last year, we have been conducting a demonstration project to see if we can do it in the Nagamu area of Iitate-mura, Fukushima Prefecture.

Until now, we have grown vegetables and flowers on farmland covered with about 50 cm of uncontaminated soil, but now we do not cover uncontaminated soil, only cabbage and green beans from soil decontaminated. I decided on a policy of raising it.

After harvesting, if the concentration of radioactive substances is examined and it is evaluated as safe to eat at a meeting of experts, it is considered to use the soil decontaminated as it is for the cultivation of vegetables.

The Ministry of the Environment says, "I would like to confirm the safety properly and consult with local residents and decide how to reuse the soil that has been decontaminated."
