In Bourgoin Jallieu (Isère), a heat wave alert had already been launched at the end of July because of high temperatures - ALLILI MOURAD / SIPA

It will be a priori less intense than that of last week, but longer. From Thursday, the new heatwave episode should last a week in some regions, warns Météo-France.

While heatwaves are increasing due to global warming, part of the country, especially in the South, was already hit at the end of last week by a very intense three-day heat peak, with temperatures blithely exceeding the 40 ° C in many stations.

A first peak in the western half

The episode will begin Thursday afternoon with a significant rise in temperatures which can already reach 35 ° C in Paris or 37 ° C in Aquitaine.

Then a first heat peak is expected on Friday over the entire western half of the country, "with peaks of 40 ° C or even 41 ° C in the South-West, peaks of 37-38 ° C in Ile-de-France and in the Center and as far as Normandy, ”said Patrick Galois.

Temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend on the Atlantic coast, but other regions, such as Ile-de-France, should remain above heatwave thresholds.

A new peak next Tuesday

"After this relative and more or less marked drop depending on the region over the weekend, a new rise in temperatures is expected at the beginning of next week and could bring us to a new heat peak around Tuesday August 11," a explained the forecaster.

It is still too early to precisely quantify this peak but it should be similar at least to that of Friday, with "35 to 39 ° C, over a good part of the country, locally perhaps 40 ° C", he said. he adds.

Succession of heat records

This new heat wave episode comes as France has recorded its hottest start to the year. The January-July 2020 period was thus the hottest ever observed since 1900, ahead of the same period of 2007, according to Météo-France.

The year 2019, marked by two exceptional episodes of heatwave during the summer and an absolute temperature record for France of 46 ° C, was the third hottest year in metropolitan France, after 2018 and 2014.
