  • Evolution: this is how Spain lost the summer in the two key weeks: active outbreaks tripled since July 16

With the shadow of a second wave on the horizon, the coronavirus epidemic continues to rise in Spain. New cases are growing, the cumulative incidence (AI) is growing, and hospitalizations are also growing rapidly, one of the aspects that specialists follow closely because it is directly related to the support capacity of the health system. For the experts, the AI gives an idea of the speed that the infection takes, but that there is a second wave depends on whether the outbreaks get out of hand and that happens when hospital and ICU admissions increase considerably because the system it may collapse , as it did in March and April.

Thus, the AI has been firing for some time. In the two weeks from July 10 to 24 it tripled, going from 11.47 to 37.94 in all of Spain, although with notable differences between the Autonomous Communities (1.66 in Asturias and 237.86 in Aragon). In the 10 days that have passed, it has only gotten worse: Spain already has an AI of 71.40. The differences between regions are still notable, but all have experienced growth . Thus, Aragon is shot with an AI of 566.14, and in Navarra (149.65) and Catalonia (158.15) it is still very high. In the latter, although the situation has improved in Lleida or Barcelona, it is worsening in the second belt of the capital, Vallés Oriental and Vallés Occidental).

But communities with small numbers like Asturias also see their AI grow , which has gone from 0 to 10.85 in a month ; The Balearic Islands, which was 4.96 and faced with the United Kingdom's ban on traveling to Spain, asked for a tourist corridor, it now has 36.02; Valencia and Andalusia, two regions that also requested to be excluded from this quarantine imposed by the British Government, have gone from 2.96 to 34.05 the first and from 3.57 to 20.22 the second.

However, the problem, as experts mention, is in other parameters whose numbers have worsened as well. The nearly 600 outbreaks do not give respite to hospitalizations for Covid, which have multiplied by four in the last month . On Friday, July 3, there were 141 hospitalizations registered in the last seven days, a figure that rose to 237 on July 20 and already rose to 594 admissions yesterday, according to data provided by the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies ( CCAES).

Again, the situation is uneven due to autonomy. Aragon also stands out in this data, going from the 10 hospitalizations registered in the last seven days that it counted on July 3 to 71 on July 20 and 237 in the report of this August 4 ( it has multiplied by more than 23 in a month ). On these same dates, from July 3 to August 4, Catalonia has gone from 13 hospitalizations in seven days to 54; Valencia from 8 to 52; Andalusia from nine to 52; Navarra from one to 24; o Balearic Islands from 1 to 11.

In terms of ICU revenue, the numbers are not too high in absolute terms, but they also follow a worrying rise and have almost tripled in the last 15 days . During the last week, 41 patients have entered the intensive care unit, a figure far from the 15 of July 20. Of these 41 people, 15 have been admitted in the last 24 hours, for a total of 11,824 patients since the start of the pandemic. By communities, Aragon has gone from registering 0 ICU cases in the last seven days a month ago to 9 in yesterday's update; Valencia from 0 to 5; Catalonia from 1 to 3; o Andalusia from 2 to 4.

The case of Madrid is curious: with a very low AI a month ago compared to regions such as Aragon or Catalonia, it has maintained similar or higher figures in terms of hospitalizations and ICU cases . Thus, on July 3 he had an AI of 11.65, 60 hospitalizations and 5 ICU admissions. About two weeks later, on July 20, her AI was 12.14 and she had 42 hospitalizations and 4 ICU cases (comparatively with Aragon, that day her AI was 160.09, that is, 13 times more, while he barely had twice as many hospitalizations, 71, and the same ICU cases, 4). Yesterday, the AI in Madrid was 66.20 with 67 admissions and 6 ICU cases.

The number of new infections in the last 24 hours continues to grow and exceeds one thousand (1,178) again, bringing the total number of people infected since the start of the pandemic to 302,814. The deceased also experience growth, still slow compared to other parameters. This lower growth in the deceased has a lot to do with the age of the sick . In this sense, according to the Carlos III Health Institute, one out of every three infected in July was under the age of 29. Thus, the Health report shows 34 deaths in the last week (15 of them in Aragon), when two weeks ago, on July 20, there were 9. Of them, only during the last 24 hours have 26 people died, which brings the total since the epidemic began to 28,498.
