VIDEO. Attack in Strasbourg: How the author of the shootings could have entered the Christmas market (Archives) - G. Varela / 20 Minutes

A man suspected of being involved in obtaining a revolver by the author of the Strasbourg attack in 2018 was released under an electronic bracelet, we learned on Wednesday from a judicial source, confirming a information from the Latest news from Alsace.

The judge of freedoms and detention (JLD) ordered on July 20 not to extend the pre-trial detention of this suspect, in particular for health reasons, and to place him under electronic surveillance. The national anti-terrorism prosecution appealed but the JLD's decision was confirmed on Monday by the investigating chamber of the Paris court of appeal.

Did he know the jihadist project of suspect number 1?

Two other members of the man's family, also prosecuted in this case, had already been released under judicial supervision in March. All three had been imprisoned after their indictment on February 2, 2019 for "criminal terrorist association" and "possession and transfer of category B weapon in meeting and in connection with a terrorist enterprise".

The investigation aims to determine whether they were aware of the profile and jihadist project of Chérif Chekatt, who killed five people near the Christmas market in the Alsatian city on December 11, 2018. According to a source familiar with the matter, these suspects claimed they believed the weapon, a late 19th century revolver, was to be used in a robbery.

A 29-year-old repeat offender who was on file for Islamist radicalization, Chérif Chekatt was shot dead by the police in Strasbourg after 48 hours of stalking. A video of allegiance to the Islamic State group was found on a USB key belonging to him. At least five people are indicted in connection with this investigation, suspected of being linked to the supply of various weapons in the possession of the killer.
