Soaring vegetable prices are expected to return to normal levels in the second half of this month Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries August 4, 15:42

The wholesale prices of vegetables such as eggplant and cucumber, which have been soaring recently due to lack of sunlight and long rain, are expected to return to normal levels in the latter half of this month.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the prices of main vegetables at the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market were 2.7 times higher for lettuce and 2 times higher for potatoes and carrots, as well as bell peppers and cucumbers as of March 3, compared to the average year. However, many vegetables are at a high level due to the lack of sunlight and long rain, such as the eggplant and cabbage increased by 60 to 70%.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said this month's price forecasts for lettuce, cucumber, eggplant, peppers and Chinese cabbage will return to normal levels in the second half of this month if the weather is favorable.

Also, the production volume of potatoes and carrots, which had been declining due to low temperatures in April, will begin to be shipped from Hokkaido in full swing, and the production volume will recover.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said, "It is expected that the growth of vegetables will be restored due to the end of the rainy season, but it may be affected again depending on future typhoons."
