25 tons of litter is collected on the sides of the highways: not every year, not every month, but every day. This is the shock figure published by the Vinci Autoroutes Foundation on the eve of the great holiday crossover. According to a survey carried out by this foundation, of which France Info is relaying, nearly a third of French women and men admit to throwing waste out of their car window.

For 82% of those, they do this because there aren't enough garbage cans, or they are always too far or too full. Vinci, concessionaire of part of the French motorways, affirms on the contrary that all areas are equipped with bins. So in an attempt to change mentalities, the corporate foundation is launching an awareness campaign this weekend.

Guilt

"Remember… the next trash can is never far away!" Is the slogan that we should see everywhere on the motorway aids but also on social networks. Biggest plague on the environment: cigarette butts. A third of smokers throw their leftover cigarette out the window.

However, the survey notes that 86% of French people questioned feel guilty about throwing waste on the edges of highways. “Despite the growing importance of environmental issues in public debate, awareness and individual behavior are struggling to progress at the same rate, especially when the French are on the road or on vacation,” estimates the Vinci Autoroutes Foundation.
