Wearing a mask to fight the coronavirus epidemic will be mandatory next week in the city center of Bayonne and Biarritz, a city whose beaches will be banned at night to limit festive meetings. A decision by the mayor (LR) of Biarritz Maider Arostéguy said at a press conference that the mask would be compulsory in the streets of the center of his city from Monday.

She added that her neighbor, the mayor of Bayonne Jean-René Etchegaray, was also adopting the measure, “and as it is coherent to reflect on these issues on an inter-municipal level, perhaps other towns on the Basque coast will follow, ”she said. In Biarritz, this will include the hyper-touristy area of the Hôtel du Palais and the beach of Port-Vieux.

Beaches closed at night

In addition, from Tuesday, the beaches of Biarritz will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., when they are currently very popular with young people who have come to party there: "If I understand correctly the festive aspirations of young people in the face of the closure discotheques, it is necessary to protect these young people and also the parents or grandparents who lodge them during their holidays ”, argued Ms. Arosteguy.

The town hall also does not refrain from closing the beach occasionally during the day, in the event of high tide which would limit the space on the sand and would lead to too high a density of bathers. “This season is totally unusual. The influx of foreign summer visitors arriving mainly by plane is replaced by French tourism which travels more by private car. The number of visitors in July was very high and we fear that August will be even more difficult to manage in the face of the health crisis. These measures are necessary to protect summer visitors and Biarrots ”, insisted Ms. Arosteguy.

The prefect of Pyrénées-Atlantiques Eric Spitz for his part announced that there were no longer any Covid-19 patients in intensive care or hospitalized in the department. He also recalled having already ordered administrative closure measures against 12 bars or restaurants in the Basque Country, including 6 for the city of Biarritz alone. "We must be able to guarantee the population the combination of holidays, parties and health security," he said.
