Cartridges of laughing gas, nitrogen protoxide. - Eric Beracassat / SIPA

The mayor of Vernon, in the Eure, has just issued a decree to prohibit the sale of nitrous oxide to minors. The substance, better known as laughing gas, is found in particular in cartridges for whipped cream siphons. Also used in hospitals for its anesthetic and pain-relieving properties, it is increasingly diverted for recreational purposes, by inhalation.

“Daily reports are made by the municipal police, social services, road and urban cleaning services, attesting to a large number of cartridges littering the ground and public space, testifying to the trivialization and the intensive use of this product. Beyond the public health risk, they are also pollution against which the city actively engages "says the town hall in a statement relayed by Actu.fr .

A fine of 68 euros

According to the decree, "it is now forbidden to sell or offer it to a minor unaccompanied by an adult". More generally, the use of laughing gas is prohibited for everyone in public places. "Failure to comply with these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of up to 68 euros", specifies the town hall, which indicates that the municipal police will visit the shops in the coming days to "hand over the prohibition order and a prevention poster for customers ”.

The regular use of laughing gas can have side effects and adverse health consequences. Among them: burns, nausea, vomiting, headaches and, in the most severe cases, loss of consciousness and neurological disorders.
