At present, it takes 90 days in the USA from the time a film has its cinema premiere before it can be rented out on a streaming service. This so-called "cinema window" will now be significantly shortened.

According to the agreement between Universal and AMC, the main owner of the Swedish Film City, the window will only last 17 days.

The agreement is described as a radical step for the industry and includes a number of popular film titles from Universal.

- A historic and industry-destroying agreement, says Adam Aron, CEO of AMC, according to AP.

In the coming weeks, international distribution agreements will be drawn up for the countries, including Europe, where AMC has operations.
