Vaccine shows promising results in monkeys

The vaccine developed by American biotech Moderna in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) triggered a "robust" immune response and prevented replication of the virus in the lungs and noses of monkeys, according to results released Tuesday. It is one of two western vaccines, along with that of the University of Oxford / AstraZeneca, to have started large-scale trials, on thousands of human participants, known as phase 3.

Seven of eight monkeys vaccinated in this study and then deliberately exposed to the coronavirus four weeks later no longer had detectable replicating virus in the lungs two days later, and none of the eight had virus in their nose, according to results published by the New England Journal of Medicine. Donald Trump's government has invested nearly $ 1 billion to support the development of this vaccine.

1,600 dead in 24 hours in the United States, numerous contaminations in Bombay

The pandemic continues to spread in the United States . The country recorded the heaviest daily death toll from the coronavirus since mid-May on Tuesday, with nearly 1,600 dead. The authorities have also identified more than 60,000 new cases in one day, after a slight decrease in the last two days.

Worldwide, the disease has already killed 654,477, according to the latest report established by AFP on Tuesday. The United States remains the most bereaved country with more than 149,000 deaths, ahead of Brazil (88,539). Colombia has passed the 9,000 death mark.

In Mumbai, a study commissioned by the city and published on Tuesday, shows that more than half of the slum dwellers of the city in western India appeared to have had the coronavirus and have antibodies. India is already the third most affected country in the world after the United States and Brazil, with nearly 1.5 million cases. Experts have warned that due to the shortage of tests, the actual figure could be much higher.

The Spain has in turn given the number of new cases more than triple daily for two weeks, to exceed 1,800. After France and the United Kingdom, Germany has advised its nationals against traveling there.
And Greece has announced for its part that it is once again making the mask compulsory in almost all closed places.

A very limited beginning of a great pilgrimage to Mecca

The pilgrimage to Mecca, one of the five pillars of Islam, began on Wednesday in an extremely small format and under close surveillance due to the pandemic. Only 1,000 to 10,000 faithful Muslims, up from 2.5 million last year, participate in the hajj in Saudi Arabia. Subjected to screening tests and placed in quarantine upon their arrival in Mecca, the faithful selected will still have to observe a quarantine after the pilgrimage.

Contrary to custom and due to the Covid-19 pandemic, pilgrims will not be allowed to touch the Kaaba in order to limit the risk of infection, authorities said, saying they had deployed mobile clinics and ambulances on the ground to face any eventuality.
