MP LR Eric Ciotti, rapporteur for the commission of inquiry on the management of the coronavirus crisis, believes that "we have reduced the chances of the elderly", some having been "deprived of access" to the hospital, in an interview with Le Monde .

"Yes, the hospital has adapted, but at what cost? First of all, there was a massive deprogramming of non-Covid care, the consequences of which we will measure later. There was, then, a form of regulation which, without saying it, deprived of access to the hospital of the elderly, in particular the residents of nursing homes, ”points out Eric Ciotti, halfway through the work of the commission investigation.

"We have reduced the chances of the elderly"

“At the peak of the crisis, at the beginning of April, the number of people over the age of 75 admitted to intensive care fell sharply. We go from 25% on average (at the same period, in previous years) to 14% during the crisis, and even to 6% in Ile-de-France ”, he points out, relying on data. transmitted by the General Directorate of Health.

“So our system has indeed been overwhelmed. The chances of the elderly have been reduced. Many could possibly have been saved. It's serious, ”denounces the elected right. And to continue: “nursing homes and home care and help services were the poor relatives of the crisis. Many witnesses, including coordinating doctors, deplored the lack of protective equipment in nursing homes at the start of the crisis ”.

There was "a major lack of anticipation"

The inquiry committee will resume its work at the start of the school year, particularly on the shortage of protective masks. According to Eric Ciotti, there was “a major lack of anticipation”. During his hearing, the former Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn assured that the subject of the surveillance of the stocks of masks did not go back especially to his level, which Eric Ciotti doubts. He reports having been "personally challenged by a handwritten note placed in front of her, where it was written:" Say as little as possible about the masks "".

A commission of inquiry was also launched in early July in the Senate, dominated by the right. According to a press release, it will devote its work to the resumption of debates on September 1 to elderly people in nursing homes and at home, and on September 2, to ethical questions and to hearing professional orders. Scientific Council, former ministers, current and former directors general of health will follow mid-September.
