Nourhène Hocini on vacation for a video on YouTube - Nourhène Hocini / YouTube

  • Yes, YouTubers are people like everyone else and they need vacations too.
  • Still, it's hard for content creators to walk away from their YouTube channel during the summer.
  • Between taking a break and staying connected, videographers face a difficult choice.

Whether or not to be active on your YouTube channel during the holidays is the question dozens of videographers are asking themselves right now. During their holidays, the French remain connected to the Internet and watch videos on their smartphones, their toes fan-shaped on the beach. By stopping posting content for a while, YouTubers are likely to miss the boat as people have more time to devote to their entertainment.

An equally regular or even accelerated pace

For many YouTubers, the word “vacation” is not part of their vocabulary. It is even a time for creativity. In August, Léna Situations will publish for example 31 videos over the days, without interruption. Nourhène Hocini, too, devotes more time to her channel during the summer. “When I go on vacation, I film a lot. I have more things to show like traveling, festivals, going out with friends, so I would probably release more videos, ”she says. In short, it will therefore be half vacation. In the space of a few weeks, the young woman will then bring her adventures in Greece or Crete with her darling and his friends to her nearly 750,000 subscribers.

For more than 1,000 days, gaming youtuber Oximoz has been spinning, editing and releasing different content every day on his channel. Better, he even publishes two videos daily while juggling his secondary channel. “But obviously, it comes at a price and it is that of not going on vacation for a very long time,” he says. By working just in time, the videographer does not want to allow himself to stray too long from his platform and cannot get ahead of his program. Result: he only allows himself two or three weeks of vacation per year.

Youtubeur, full-time job

According to a survey conducted by the online temp agency Qapa in 2019, 67% of French people find it difficult, if not impossible, to find work during the holidays. The same goes for Youtubers who find it difficult to move away from social networks, and therefore from their professional environment. “You can take vacations without necessarily creating content on YouTube, but it's still more complicated for networks like Instagram or Snapchat where there are ephemeral stories, admits Nourhène Hocini. When I don't story, subscribers worry about me. "

“I never do complete breaks with the networks but I sometimes take breaks for a few days on YouTube, that's enough for me, supports Romy Victory, a videographer with 800,000 subscribers. Most of the time, when I go on vacation… I film them! For her, the business of an entrepreneur can actually lead to excesses, in particular because of the regularity of publication that it imposes on itself. To keep your audience, nothing better than to find them at fixed intervals. “I want to be regular because my videos are a meeting with my community, with which I have a special link because I do a lot of vlog formats. It's a bit like a journal that I keep every week, ”explains Romy Victory.

"You must not empty yourself of all your creative essence"

The problem of putting videos online during the summer affects less "the big youtubers", those who have their number of subscribers in the millions. For the duo McFly and Carlito, the production of videos is done in sessions, with two weeks of writing, two weeks of filming, then two weeks of editing. A frantic pace which allows them to have less head in the handlebars and to concentrate on other things, like a potential album or a series.

According to McFly, vacations are essential to the personal (and professional) well-being of YouTubers. “If we do too much just in time, we get tired and we cannot hold out in the long term,” he argues. Our goal with my friend is to be here in 15 years, on YouTube or not, and to have desires and ideas. For this, you must not empty yourself of all your creative essence and take breaks from time to time. "

The heavyweights of the “YouTube Game” are therefore more likely to spend the summer in the sun than their colleagues who are less exposed to the media. “I prefer to take my time and release something I like. We have very privileged lives so we don't need to take a big break in terms of vacations either, ”tempers Norman Thavaud, accompanied by his 12 million subscribers. The best known live from various projects, and are not entirely dependent on YouTube, which is why they can detach themselves from it during the summer. But for others, the camera is a must to slip in the suitcase before leaving.
