A sheep farm - F. Brenon / 20Minutes

Almost three-quarters of the French population (73%) support the organization of a referendum on animal rights, according to an Ifop study carried out for the specialized information site on dogs Caniprof. Respondents are broadly in favor of measures being taken to protect animals.

Seven in ten voters (71%) say they would gladly sign the petition, which is necessary for the validation of the shared initiative referendum (RIP) procedure. At the beginning of July, the RIP project was launched by several large French business leaders and it is supported in particular by journalist Hugo Clément, Nicolas Hulot, Juliette Binoche or Yann Arthus-Bertrand, specifies Le Parisien .

Towards better controlled breeding

In detail, 87% of French people want farm animals to have the possibility of daily access to the outdoors. Slightly fewer (73%) want to ban the breeding of animals in cages. On older themes concerning the fight for animal welfare, 68% of the people questioned want to abolish the breeding of fur animals.

One theme is unanimous: experimentation on animals. Respondents are 75% to want its ban when alternatives are possible. The ban on hunting with hounds and the digging up of foxes and badgers is requested by 67% of respondents. Regarding the ban on shows with wild animals, positions are less unanimous: 57% are in favor. If this RIP is in place, 49% of the people questioned declared that they were ready to travel to vote.
