"Self-portrait wearing a pipe collar and black hat" is one of 80 self-portraits that the artist painted. The work was completed in Amsterdam at the end of 1632. Rembrandt was then 26 years old.

Sotheby's states in a statement that six persistent bidders competed to become owners of the painting.

Only three of Rembrandt's self-portraits are privately owned. One was sold at Sotheby's in 2003 and another is on loan to the National Gallery in Scotland.
