A suspected jellyfish organism found in a well in Shihui Village, Tongshi Town, Wuzhishan City, Hainan Province in early July was recently confirmed to be a Sophia jellyfish. This is another appearance of this endangered creature in China.

After sampling by researchers from the Institute of Freshwater Fisheries of the Hainan Academy of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, using DNA barcode technology, the comparison found that the similarity between the Wuzhishan Peach Blossom Jellyfish and the Sophisticated Peach Blossom Jelly was 99.25%.

It is understood that the peach blossom jellyfish is an endangered, ancient and rare coelenterate. It was first born hundreds of millions of years ago. Its preciousness is comparable to that of giant pandas, and it is known as the "living fossil" in the water. (Reporter Wang Xiaobin and Li Yufan)
