[Explanation] Lan Hongli is a registered poor household in Beigantun, Dongjiang Village, Bagong Town, Jinchengjiang District, Hechi City, Guangxi. The natural conditions in Beigantun are harsh, with many mountains and little land, traffic congestion, and the road leading to the village has only a narrow and steep path. To help the children save time at school, Lan Hongli spent three months using a hatchet to open a path in the mountains with his bare hands. The reporter went to visit.

[Explanation] Lan Hongli said that generations of people have struggled to make a living in this poor mountain nest. Knowledge can change their destiny. No matter how difficult it is, it is his life's wish to let the two daughters out of the mountain. Children need to walk more than two hours during school in the village to get to the teaching point in the village. Later, the eldest daughter Lan Yun with excellent grades was arranged to study in Bagong Town Junior High School. The journey to school was even more distant. He opened a shortcut with bare hands, saving Lan Yun more than an hour to go to school. In order to ensure a smooth path, every once in a while, he took a sickle to clear the weeds and thorns on both sides.

Our generations of illiterate people have not had to read, illiterate. Now that (the child) is old, I will tell you to read, and I will try my best to read to you. I went to Bagong (town) central elementary school to study. I said that it took too long for this road to bend (walk) here. I said that I would use a hatchet to open the path (for children) to Bagong (primary school).

[Commentary] Lan Yun told reporters that studying hard and getting out of the mountains is the goal since childhood. Before she went to elementary school, her father Lan Hongli made a special trip to retrieve an abandoned blackboard from outside the mountain and taught her to recognize simple numbers. After school, my father gets up at 5 a.m. every day, prepares breakfast for her, prepares lunch, and asks her to take her to school. In order to arrive at the school on time, I had to start with a flashlight before dawn. Over the past 10 years, 15 flashlights have been broken. Others think that girls are "promising" in reading, but no matter what others say, the father always insists on reading for himself.

He just started to go to school. He bought me all his things, my school bag before school, and my lunch box. He said that if someone else has you, you must have it, because you have to go to school with others. (Father) He is very persistent in everything, including reading to me. Even if others say what your child is, your child will be very stupid. No matter how hard he works, he won’t be successful, but my father won’t. Thinking about it this way, he said that I must make you work hard, must study and must (go) out.

[Explanation] Now, Lan Yun has just graduated from university this year and signed a contract with a high school in Hechi City to become a people's teacher. Her younger sister Lan Liu took the college entrance examination this year. Since 2016, Lan Hongli's family has received a total of more than 48,000 yuan in education support funds such as the Yulu Program, the National Student Grant, and the Backing Unit Grant. In addition, they have received industry support, relocation, and subsistence allowances.

[Commentary] Lan Yun said frankly that she is grateful to her parents, and even more grateful to the benefactor who helped her family. She will tell the students about her experience and encourage them to cherish the present and study hard.
