Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government responds to EU report: the remarks are baseless

In response to the report on Hong Kong issued by the European Commission and the European Union’s high-level foreign and security policy representatives, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government responded on the 23rd and stated that the remarks in the report are baseless and that EU member states should be pragmatic and rational, and focus on mutually beneficial relations between the two sides.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government said that he could not agree with the comments in the report on Hong Kong's implementation of "one country, two systems". The implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy is in the interests of the people of Hong Kong, meets the needs of maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and is in the fundamental interests of the country. The Central People's Government has repeatedly stated that it will unswervingly implement the "one country, two systems" policy. But this must be based on a correct understanding of the relationship between "one country" and "two systems." The most important thing is to firmly safeguard the country's sovereignty, security and development interests.

The spokesperson emphasized that no one can override the law. The street violence and clashes in the past few months did not result in death as a result of police actions. Instead, one innocent citizen was killed by a mob, another citizen was severely burned, and hundreds of frontline police officers were injured. The police have always handled public assemblies and processions in accordance with Hong Kong law in a fair, impartial and impartial manner.

The spokesperson pointed out that the report mentioned that the Hong Kong District Council elections in 2019 were conducted "peacefully". The truth is that before the election day, people including candidates were attacked and their property was destroyed. The number of complaints received in this election was the highest in history, and the increase was astonishing. Among them, 1,458 complaints related to criminal damage, violent acts and intimidation. Any irresponsible behavior and attempts to influence election activities will not be tolerated.

The spokesperson pointed out that the European Commission has also expressed some opinions on the law on the maintenance of national security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. National security is the central authority. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has so far failed to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities and maintain national security through local legislation. Therefore, this legislation is constitutional, legal, sensible and reasonable.

The spokesperson finally pointed out that the report mentioned that individual countries or parliaments have introduced measures or bills against Hong Kong. These actions are flagrant violations of international law and do not serve the interests of Hong Kong residents and bilateral partners. Hong Kong and the EU member states have close economic and trade relations. In recent years, the two sides have been promoting bilateral cultural and technological cooperation. The SAR government calls on EU member states to be pragmatic and rational, and to put the two sides' mutually beneficial relationship as the most important. (Headquarters reporter Zhou Weiqi Jindong)
