A YouTuber specializing in photo and film restoration improved the quality of images from the 1972 Apollo 16 lunar mission. Thanks to his work, anyone can now enjoy 4K quality video at 60 frames per second, Futura explains. Sciences .

“I really wanted to offer a unique experience with these old images. I looked for the highest quality source videos first, which luckily found as high bitrate 720p video files. The quality issue was already resolved, ” the man who runs the DutchSteamMachine YouTube channel told Universe Today .

Originally jerky sequences

Then, the problem of the frame rate had to be solved. Originally, the astronauts of the Apollo 16 lunar mission, Charlie Duke and John Young, recorded movies at a maximum of 12 frames per second. “Most of the sequences shot were still very jerky,” explains the specialist.

Faced with this problem, he used software based on artificial intelligence which comes to insert false images recreated from scratch between the real images. Then all he had to do was apply a color correction and synchronize the images with the sound. And the result is stunning! The youtubeur did not stop there. He also posted videos of the Apollo 15 mission.
