The Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti said on Wednesday that he had not received "any information on the situation" from Gerald Darmanin, targeted by a rape charge. The appointment of the Minister of the Interior has drawn strong criticism and continues to mobilize feminists in the streets.

“At this stage, I have received absolutely no information on Darmanin's situation. I know one thing, and you will share it with me, is that he is presumed innocent ”, declared the minister, during his hearing by the Senate Law Committee.

"I do not refrain from any feedback"

The new Minister of the Interior has been the subject since 2017 of a complaint from a woman who had requested him in 2009 to try to overturn a conviction. According to the complainant, Darmanin would have dangled his support for her and she would have felt compelled to “take the plunge”. He says it was on the contrary a voluntary relationship. More than 15 days after his appointment, Gérald Darmanin continues to face criticism that weakens and obliges the majority to support him, sometimes in an embarrassed manner.

"I do not forbid any feedback" from the prosecution to the Chancellery, also declared Eric Dupond-Moretti, defending this principle, like his predecessors Place Vendôme. “Regarding the cases that concerned me, I will have absolutely no feedback. There is a list, ”assured the former lawyer, who was notably the defender of the former Secretary of State George Tron and the former Budget Minister Jérôme Cahuzac.

"What will you use these lifts for?"

"Why do you want to maintain the feedback of information to the Minister of Justice while affirming that the Minister of Justice will never use it to give instructions to the prosecution?" What are you going to use these lifts for? ”Asked the chairman of the law commission, Philippe Bas (LR).

“I am also the head of penal policy: it seems to me quite normal that the Minister of Justice is informed. I remind you that these are our texts. I intend to receive the information, ”replied the Minister.

"From there to using them to call a particular prosecutor or, even worse, such a judge of the seat, no, I tell you no. I am bound to respect the law ", he continued, before adding:" There is no reason that within the framework of a commission you (the senators) intervene in a matter (... ) and that the Keeper of the Seals is not informed of this. It is normal for the Keeper of the Seals to know what are the matters which may concern the State, the functioning of the State ”.
