  • Health: how long to wait for the Oxford vaccine against Covid-19?

Researchers from King's College London in the United Kingdom have defined six "types" of Covid-19 depending on the group of symptoms they present.

Although persistent cough, fever, and loss of smell (anosmia) are commonly reported , data collected by scientists through the COVID Sympston Study App reveals a wide range of symptoms including migraines, muscle pain, fatigue, diarrhea, confusion or loss of appetite.

To find out if some symptoms tend to manifest together and how this relates to Covid-19 progression, the team of researchers has used a machine learning algorithm to analyze data from a subgroup of about 1,600 users in the UK and the United States. United confirmed with covid-19 that regularly entered their symptoms in the aforementioned application between March and April.

In this sense, the study, published on June 16 but has not yet been reviewed by independent experts, has determined six groups of symptoms that they describe as different "types" of Covid-19.

"These findings have important implications for the care and monitoring of people who are most vulnerable to the most severe form of Covid-19," study author Dr. Claire Steves said in statements collected by the BBC.

The six "types" of Covid-19

1. Flu without fever : headache, loss of smell, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, chest pain, no fever.

2. Flu with fever : headache, loss of smell, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.

3. Gastrointestinal : headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, diarrhea, sore throat, chest pain, no cough.

4. Severe level one, fatigue : headache, loss of smell, cough, fever, hoarseness, chest pain, fatigue.

5. Severe level two, confusion: headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle pain.

6. Severe level three, abdominal and respiratory : headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle pain, shortness of breath, diarrhea, pain abdominal.

migraines and loss of smell, recurring symptoms

As can be seen in the different symptom groupings, headache and loss of smell are the most common. In addition, others such as confusion or abdominal pain that are not so associated with the coronavirus were recorded.

Scientists have also studied the correlation between the grouping of symptoms and the need for medical care by the sick. In this sense, they have indicated that a very low percentage of people with clusters 1, 2 and 3 required respiratory assistance (between 1.5% and 3.3%), while the percentage of assistance rises in those who manifested symptoms of types 4, 5 and 6 (8.6%, 9.9% and 19.8%, respectively).
