  • The evolution of the coronavirus epidemic in Brittany calls for "vigilance".
  • According to the prefect, the non-respect of barrier gestures during private gatherings would be more in question than the arrival of tourists from other regions.

A situation which calls for "vigilance". On Tuesday morning, the prefect of Brittany Michèle Kirry confirmed an increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 in the region, however immediately excluding more coercive measures to limit its spread.

“Between May 11 and July 10, we had around ten new positive cases for the whole region per week. We are at more than one hundred since July 10, it is an increase which calls for vigilance, declared Michèle Kirry on the occasion of a press conference in Rennes. Eight foci of infections (clusters) have been identified in Finistère, three in Côtes-d'Armor and none in Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine.

Very few new cases outside Brittany

Michèle Kirry emphasized the need to respect barrier gestures also during gatherings and private parties. “Which is probably more difficult to understand,” she observed, giving the example of a cluster that formed at a party that brought together around 200 people.

The increase in the number of cases did not surprise the authorities. "We automatically knew that the summer period, which is conducive to a greater mixing of the population, would give rise to an increase in the number of positive cases", admitted the prefect, who did not link this increase to summer visitors from other regions. "It would be totally wrong to say:" Brittany would be preserved as it has been if it had no tourists ... "since the new cases outside Brittany are very few out of the hundred that have been recorded every week », She noted.

Towards more coercive measures?

The State representative indicated that she was not immediately considering the implementation of more coercive measures, such as movement restrictions or the closing of establishments. “I'm not considering it today but that doesn't mean I won't consider it tomorrow. The legal system in place allows the prefect to activate a certain number of restrictive measures. If necessary, I will do it, with regret, ”warned Michèle Kirry.

Since the start of the health crisis, Brittany has been relatively spared from Covid-19 with 262 deaths, people who were between 48 and 100 years old, according to the latest report communicated by the Regional Health Agency (ARS).
