Coronavirus screening operation in Mayenne - JEAN-FRANCOIS MONIER / AFP

  • In Mayenne, a territory still classified as "high vulnerability", some 8,700 people were tested in ten days.
  • According to the Regional Health Agency, “this action plan is starting to bear fruit”.

The department remains in a situation of "high vulnerability" but "encouraging" indicators show that "the action plan is starting to bear fruit". This is the message from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Pays-de-la-Loire, which provided an update on the coronavirus epidemic in Mayenne this Tuesday evening. In this department, the number of cases has skyrocketed since the beginning of July (600 in total identified). A vast campaign of tests among the population was launched eight days ago.

According to Jean-Jacques Coiplet, the director, nearly 8,700 tests have been carried out since, in the four centers currently specially open in Laval and in the rest of the department. And contrary to what one might think, it is not because we look for more that we find more cases. “Regarding the positivity rate, it had risen to around 8% at the beginning of July,” confirms the director. It has come down to 3% and continues to stabilize, at 2.7% today. This is a favorable indicator as we are carrying out a screening campaign on an unprecedented scale. The incidence rate is around 61 per 100,000. We must continue to be very vigilant ”.

Eleven people hospitalized

In the coming days, mobile screening centers will be set up to continue testing the 300,000 inhabitants (volunteers) in the department. This Tuesday, 11 people were still hospitalized in Mayenne, including three in intensive care. "The situation is under control", assures Professor Vincent Dubée, infectious disease specialist at the University Hospital of Angers who came on site, who however highlights "fairly significant human resources problems at the Laval hospital" in particular because of the holidays.

In Mayenne, Santé Publique France is still monitoring six clusters, including three in slaughterhouses and two in social accommodation homes.
