• The Bunbury method: poetry and paraphrasing

You already know him, right? Presentations are unnecessary. Possible is his tenth solo studio album and he already has a career spanning 30 years. He has spent much more time in his life being a professional musician than not.

To what extent is it a burden to be Bunbury when making a Bunbury record? I try to be guided by intuition. Without paying much attention to the needs of the market, nor to what the public can expect from me. I make the records that feel and excite me and I think there will be someone out there who feels similar to me. What have you learned from yourself making these songs? With each record you do your own therapy and save yourself a psychoanalyst paste. Today, my backpack weighs less than yesterday. I keep writing songs, then I guess I still need some therapy. This album has been very comforting. Somehow it has reconciled me to the men that I could not be, and has given me hope for the possibilities that I can still be. "And I, that so many men I wanted to be", sings in Desires to use and throw away. Of all the men he wanted to be, which one is he most longing for? I always wanted to do stand up comedy , I think the world has lost a great humorist.

This man we have heard growing up in bars in Spain since 1987 does not seem like a humorist. His dramatic voice has told us and sung everything he could, we have heard it whisper and we have heard it scream, it has always sounded great and still it resists aging in our ears. It's Bunbury, they know him too well.

He is 52 years old. He is the father of a girl (Asia) of nine. He has lived in Los Angeles for a decade. " I don't read the news from Spain and only find out what my family and friends tell me," he says.

He answers the interviews by email and his wife takes the promotional photos and music videos for him. Everything controlled.

«After Palosanto (2013) and Expectativas (2017), which were albums that were committed with an eye to the social and to what I was concerned with about the future of the world, Posible is an introspective album, which avoids looking outside and wonders for other concerns of the skin inside », he explains about the lyrics of these new songs, built around electronic sounds. « It is an album for all audiences, it is an album designed to be sung and enjoyed. There is experimentation and search, but I wanted to avoid it being unjustified experimentation ».

But Bunbury has been in the news for the past month for reasons unrelated to this new set of songs. According to Fernando del Val's book The Bunbury Method (Difficult), more than 500 verses of his letters are taken from the works of other authors, without crediting; a subject on which it does not pronounce. A tweet calling to participate in a protest against Bill Gates as an alleged planner for the Covid-19 pandemic, something that sparked a wave of criticism, but did elicit his response. «I am amazed at the advocacy of bullying and stoning, by some users of social networks, and what is more incredible, by the media. It seems that all motivated by a post published on Saturday, echoing global mobilizations for all those who doubt the intentions of Bill Gates. I didn't add a single word to the poster I retweeted . In other words, the truth is that I didn't say anything at all, ”he defended himself.

For years he has avoided commenting or commenting on politics. Why? Do you consider that these are questions that draw attention to your work? I am not interested in politics. They are the crumbs that are thrown at us for the people to dispute and confront each other, while the issues that really matter and change our lives are carried out far from our sight and reach. Impressed of all this crisis, of the disease, its transmission and confinement? The security with which the quarantine of the healthy population has been carried out, without question and globally, in almost the entire planet. Pop or rock has been redefined in this time when the heroes of society are anonymous workers who are mostly poorly paid? The moment in which we live make our eyes search for saviors, because we are afraid. Panic is not a good counselor. We must listen to all the voices that they can contribute. Hundreds of scientists around the world are trying to be heard, but the global and official current hides many of these voices. There is no need to be afraid of debate, to put options on the table and value them. Without pressure, nor the media, nor the government. What has impressed you most about all this crisis, the disease, its rapid transmission and quarantine? The security with which the quarantine of the healthy population has been carried out , without question and globally ..

Freedom has been an important theme in Bunbury's lyrics, so he is very critical of the paradox that deprivation of liberty, with the confinement of the population, was the only way out of the health crisis. «What he says is not true and it also seems very dangerous to me. Only deprivation of liberty can save us? It is true that most countries have chosen this path. But there are other options, as shown, for example, in the cases of Sweden and Thailand . You may agree or not, but that there are other options, it is an unquestionable reality. In my opinion, that is one of the big questions that we have to solve soon. Are we willing to give up our freedom? A serious problem in solving that question is doing it from a state of panic. And without listening to options, or being able to choose ».

Bunbury, a stage animal, is not scheduled to return to acting until February 2021. First in Latin America, then in the US, and in August and September in Spain. “I suppose you all have heard the concert proposals in a car, capacity reduced by half or a third, the social distance, in addition to the complications with transportation and customs ... These are options that do not seem viable to us. The new normal seems unrealistic to us. So we will wait until our audience can hug and scream and enjoy. " The typical of Bunbury, they already know him, there are plenty of presentations
