The good news comes a week after Prime Minister Jean Castex's visit. The health situation is improving in Guyana where the authorities announced on Saturday a drop in the number of new cases of coronavirus.

Nearly 5,000 tests carried out last week

"The decline in the number of new confirmed cases seems to have started across the country except at Saint-Laurent du Maroni where it seems to be happening and on the Maroni river where the situation is being followed carefully," said the prefecture and the Guyana Regional Health Agency. The positivity rate is also gradually decreasing, while nearly 5,000 tests were carried out last week in this French territory of South America.

"With a delay of a few days, the number of new hospital and intensive care admissions has also started to decrease, but more slowly. The pressure on the hospital system is slowly starting to ease, ”say the authorities. Since March, the Guyana region has recorded 6,655 confirmed cases, 4,272 cured patients, 932 hospitalized patients including 86 in intensive care and 37 deaths.
