He did not wait for the official decree promised by Prime Minister Jean Castex. As of Thursday, the prefect of Finistère imposed the wearing of masks on the markets and on the islands of the department to fight against the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. In a press release, Pascal Lelarge justified this measure by "the significant influx of population during the summer period, concentrated in a few areas of the territory, especially the coastlines".

The markets are concerned but also the islands like Batz, Molène, Ouessant and Sein, which see their population being multiplied by three or four in summer, "making it difficult to respect physical distance", according to the Breton prefecture. Wearing a mask is compulsory in all closed establishments open to the public.

The number of cases on the rise in Brittany

If the prefect did not wait for the national decree, it is also because his department experienced "a significant increase in the number of patients tested positive". From July 10 to 15, 48 cases were revealed according to data from the Regional Health Agency. A figure ten times higher than the previous week. In Brittany, 110 positive cases were recorded over the same period, against 14 the previous week.

In Saint-Malo, another town very popular in summer, the new mayor Gilles Lurton had also imposed the wearing of masks from July 15. Nationally, wearing a mask in enclosed spaces receiving the public will become mandatory "next week", announced Prime Minister Jean Castex.
