A year ago, demonstrations against violence against women were at the origin of the Grenelle. - Jacques Witt / Sipa

"I say it with great caution, we would observe a slight decrease in the number of feminicides since the beginning of the year," greeted last week the former Secretary of State for Gender Equality Marlène Schiappa, passing the hand to the new minister in charge of this cause, Elisabeth Moreno. According to AFP figures, the number of feminicides has indeed been declining since the start of the year in France.

Agence France Presse thus counted at least 39 women killed by their spouse or ex since the beginning of the year, thanks to the census conducted by the collective "Feminicides by companion or ex". But the figure could however be higher, the circumstances of a dozen cases still to be specified.

Last year, between January and July, some 70 deaths had been recorded (126 for the whole year).

In early summer 2019, after several resounding cases, thousands of people had gathered in Paris at the call of a group of families and relatives of victims to demand immediate measures, pushing the government to announce the holding of a "Grenelle against violence" at the start of the school year.

"Many feminicides happen when women want to leave"

Was there then a Grenelle effect? For Floriane Volt, director of public affairs for the Women's Foundation, if "the trend seems to be decreasing, we can see an effect of the Grenelle but above all something cyclical, linked to confinement".

"Many feminicides occur when women want to leave, and many have been unable to leave during this period," she analyzes, saying that, in order to "really lower the numbers, more accommodation solutions are needed." in specialized places with suitable support ”.

“During the confinement, the women were trapped. It is when Madame says: "I'm going away" that he kills her, "also says Sandrine Bouchait, president of the National Union of Feminicide Families (UNFF), fearing a" backlash ".

Period particularly at risk in terms of domestic violence, confinement has indeed resulted in a 36% increase in interventions by law enforcement for this reason.
