On Reunion Island, the reproduction rate of the coronavirus has been increasing since Thursday. This increase is mainly due to the arrival on the island of patients who contracted Covid-19 elsewhere, and not by an increase in its circulation, nuanced the health authorities.

The index measuring the number of people infected by a sick person - R0 - reaches 2.26, which means that one infected person contaminates more than two others, according to the map of the Ministry of Health. It is 1.18 in mainland France. The Indian Ocean Regional Health Agency (ARS) relativized this reproduction rate on Friday. "It cannot be calculated like that of the mainland" because "we are in an import situation, not traffic", explained on the TV channel Réunion 1st François Chieze, director of monitoring and health security at the ARS.

Resuscitation services in the green

"We cannot consider that we are in a situation of anxiety in relation to an increasing viral situation," he added. Of 612 cases recorded since March 11, "434 are imported cases and therefore concern people who contracted the disease outside the territory," said the ARS.

Seventy-eight are secondary Aboriginal cases "that is, people with a direct connection to imported cases", and 100 of the cases are "Aboriginal involving people with an indirect connection or having no connection with an imported case, ”detailed the Agency. Reunion Island remains in the green regarding the occupancy rate of intensive care beds, the incidence rate (positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants) and the positivity rate of the tests.

A Covid test to present on arrival on the island

As of Friday morning, 18 people were still hospitalized. Sixteen of these patients are medical evacuees arriving from Mayotte. The four patients placed in intensive care also arrive from this island. The three people who died on the island from the Covid-19 suites were also medical evacuees from Mayotte.

In a letter sent to the government and health authorities on Monday, the island's health professionals community was "alarmed" by "the significant increase in the number of cases of Covid + patients, including imported cases but also indigenous cases ”.

In the past 48 hours, eight indigenous cases have been identified, including seven infected by a loved one who contracted the disease outside the territory. From Saturday, before flying to Reunion Island, you will have to justify a negative Covid-19 test carried out within 72 hours before boarding.
