In recent days, Gérald Darmanin has been the subject of protests and forums denouncing his appointment. The new Minister of the Interior, targeted by a rape complaint said, this Thursday, "victim of a manhunt".

"I have been slandered, I do not wish anyone to be wrongly accused and I do not even wish my worst enemy to be the victim of the manhunt I am in today the object, "he said on Europe 1.

'We are in fact beyond the presumption of innocence'

The Minister recalled that three court decisions "concluded that there was a total absence of an offense" and considered that the criticisms and controversies targeting him were underpinned by "political reasons" which sought to "weaken (...) the government of the President of the Republic ”.

During his interview on July 14, Emmanuel Macron defended the appointment of Gérald Darmanin in the name of the presumption of innocence. Questioned on LCI, this Thursday, Marlène Schiappa, Minister Delegate for Citizenship, for her part, affirmed that "we are in fact beyond the presumption of innocence", after the previous court decisions.

The appointment to the government of Gérald Darmanin has since aroused the anger of feminist movements and critics of a part of the political world.

The platform of a feminist collective

In a column published in Le Monde , a group of 91 "activists, intellectuals, feminist political women" writes that "this reshuffle of the French government represents an anti-feminist political turn, whose scope goes far beyond the borders of France" and "reinforces the "backlash" against women, in violation of fundamental rights ".

Gérald Darmanin was accused in 2017 of rape by a woman, Sophie Patterson-Spatz, who requested it in 2009, when he was project manager in the legal affairs department of the UMP (party which became LR), in an attempt to to have his 2004 conviction set aside, for blackmail and malicious calls against an ex-partner.

Initially closed without further action, the procedure was relaunched by the Paris Court of Appeal, which asked for new investigations at the start of June.
