The administrative court of Châlons-en-Champagne rejected on Wednesday the summary of a collective contesting the authorization granted in June by the prefecture of Haute-Marne to open in 2021 near Joinville an industrial laundry of clothes from nuclear installations .

"In the state of the investigation, none of the means invoked is likely to give rise to a serious doubt as to the legality of the contested decision", notes the court in its order of July 15 that AFP was to consult.

Concern over radiological releases to the river

The “Collective against Unitech”, grouping together eight environmental protection associations including Greenpeace France and the “Sortir du nuclear” network, based its request on the inadequacy of the impact study, as regards both radiological discharges into the Marne river or consequences for aquatic fauna.

"We are maintaining our second appeal, which disputes, basically, this laundry," reacted to AFP Me Samuel Delalande, lawyer for the "Collective against Unitech".

“It is a confirmation of the quality of our file. We are serene, ”said Jacques Grisot, CEO of Unitech-France, a subsidiary of the American group Unitech Services at the origin of the project. "The Covid-19 risk poses a risk to our planning," he added, estimating an opening in 2022 rather than 2021 as initially planned.

An opening moved back to 2022

Launched in 2016, this laundry project had received a favorable opinion from the public utility investigation in January. Located in an activity zone in Suzannecourt, on the banks of the Marne, this equipment is intended to decontaminate and wash approximately 1,900 tonnes per year of clothing worn by employees working in “weakly” or uncontaminated areas of nuclear sites.

According to the network "Sortir du nuclear", this project must "take over from the old laundromat from Orano (ex-Areva) in La Hague (Manche) whose upgrading to standards had been deemed too costly". According to France Nature Environnement Grand Est, the laundromat "would be accompanied by a storage center for contaminated material" with contours that have been imprecise until now.
