The elections in Galicia and the Basque Country have not produced many surprises, as predicted by most polls, but have generated a deep sense of alarm at the strong rise in the nationalist vote in both communities . A reality that confirms the triumph of rupture theses over the common integration project that our Constitution symbolizes. Particularly worrying is the case of the Basque Country, where, between PNV and EH Bildu, the two sovereign forces on both sides of the ideological spectrum, account for almost 70% of the votes . By cons, the more than praiseworthy effort of PP and Cs to maintain the constitutional dignityhas not been rewarded. The coalition led by Iturgaiz has not only failed to add new seats to the nine obtained in 2016, but has subtracted, remaining with only five representatives in the Basque chamber, predicting a similar failure in the Catalan elections in the fall, forcing both parties to rethink their common strategy .

But also in Galicia the radical Galicianism of the BNG has been reborn , which is again the second political force, going from six to 19 seats, at the cost of the disenchanted vote of the purple ones (who lose their 14 deputies in 2016 and disappear as a political force) and of a PSOE that maintains itself without knowing how to take advantage of the effective propaganda apparatus mounted from Moncloa . This success will be of little use to the BNG for its efforts to repeat the disastrous coalition government of 2005, since Alberto Núñez Feijóo has devastated the polls and will govern with a comfortable absolute majority of 42 seats (one more than in 2016) for the fourth consecutive time. Feijóo obtained the support of the majority of Galicians this Sunday, who have rewarded the political coherence of the PP during the last three legislatures, their good work in the autonomous administration and the excellent management of the health crisis, bringing together the person vote of the center right and leaving neither Cs nor Vox without political space.

Iñigo Urkullu , for his part, shows that the PNV is an invincible force in the Basque Country. The voters have not taken its toll neither for the poor management of the pandemic, nor for the collapse of the Zaldívar landfill , nor for the case of Alfredo de Miguel , number two of the party in Álava sentenced in 2019 to 13 years in prison for directing the largest corrupt plot in recent community history . Urkullu not only wins the elections again, but increases the distance with his followers, going from the 27 seats won in 2016 to 31. No one in the Basque Country has ever obtained an absolute majority to be able to govern alone, so Urkullu will have than to form its third stable government , again appealing to the support of the PSOE , whose leader, Idoia Mendia - who adds one more seat to the 9 he had in 2016 - promised during the campaign not to form an alliance with the heirs of ETA ( that they achieve their best historical result with 22 seats and consolidate as second political force) and the brand of Unidos Podemos in Euskadi, which suffers a harsh correction from 11 to six seats . And, without a doubt, the party that registers the greatest collapse, both in Galicia and in the Basque Country, is United We Can, which pays dearly for the arrogance of its national leader, Pablo Iglesias , the negligence of the Government, of which it is part As vice president, in the management of the health crisis, the recent Dina case , in which, in addition, he has adopted a paternalistic and macho attitude, and the internal division in both communities, especially in Galicia, where the tides do not get representation either.

Vox, finally, has managed to set foot in the Basque chamber by obtaining a seat for Álava , but it demonstrates the scarce repercussion of its project in a community that has proven to be largely nationalist, and whose society seems to have already forgotten constitutional alternatives such as the one At the time they represented Mayor Oreja and Nicolás Redondo Terreros .
