The regional elections that take place tomorrow in the Basque Country and Galicia are shrouded in uncertainty that has little to do with the electoral results . According to all the polls, both Núñez Feijóo and Urkullu will not only revalidate their victory, but will also widen the distance with the second most voted party, making an alternative government of the PNV in Euskadi and that of the PP in Galicia.

It is true that the different brands of Unidas Podemos have radicalized their speech by dusting off the tricolor flags and their republican proclamations, even calling for the abdication of King Felipe VI and a referendum on the Monarchy. An anti-system drift to the desperate to avoid a more than probable desertion of its voters, disappointed by the ridiculous, ineffective and negligent role played in the Government by Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero . But everything indicates that it will be difficult to form a tripartite left wing nationalists of Otegi and the PSOE to unseat the power of the PNV, which the socialist leader, Idoia Mendia, has already ruled out beforehand. The constitutionalist alternative represented by the laudable understanding between PP and Cs lacks sufficient relevance in a community subjected for long decades to the absolute hegemony of nationalism, a situation that could be repeated in the Catalan autonomies next fall. In Galicia, it is also not very likely that the entire left and nationalism will be able to combine sufficient electoral force and the will to understand to prevent Feijóo from ruling with his hands free for the fourth consecutive time .

The extraordinary thing about these elections, therefore, is in the health crisis, specifically in the new outbreaks of coronavirus that will force both the authorities and the population to take extreme precautionary measures to avoid community transmission. Both regional governments have guaranteed the voters that they will be able to go to their schools without any risk, as long as each citizen complies scrupulously with the established protocols and with the recommendations of hygiene , social distancing and use of the mask . However, the two regional executives can be blamed for lack of diligence in anticipating situations such as those experienced in both territories, in which infections are increasing.

In fact, in a decision that supposes an apparent violation of the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime , some 500 people have been prohibited from voting in the elections, either for being infected with Covid-19, for having symptoms compatible with the disease or for being quarantined. The Loreg only prevents "those convicted by a final judicial decision" from voting and obliges the authorities to guarantee that of the rest of the population "with the means of support" required by each citizen. Therefore, it could be arbitrary, as a result of lack of foresight, alleging public health reasons to remove from those citizens their inalienable right to vote . It is urgent that this right be restored to them, offering them the postponement of the vote or providing them with an alternative and safe way of doing so, to guarantee that the electoral process is absolutely democratic.
