It was called Avenero . It weighed 595 kilos and was one of the six bulls chosen by Garcigrande for its premiere in Pamplona. Big words. It could not be documented that this Avenero had any special animosity towards the Navarrese. Maybe they overcharged him on a previous trip to Pamplona , or maybe some cow hit him with a tough bull from Navarra. The point is that as soon as he left the pens on July 10, 2014, he was clear about his goals. He aimed and fired quite wisely.

Not even a half minute of confinement had elapsed when the garcigrande threw himself onto the first corridor. Punch, turn of the bell and gored on the left thigh. From that moment, he launched into a furious race, a phenomenal gallop, with which he was literally sweeping the street. Six seconds later he went to the left sidewalk and ran over three runners. Another of them, covered by his companions, suddenly found Avenero , who kicked him off in a bad way in the middle of the race. And it didn't stop there.

The rest of Santo Domingo opened a space of prudence , fear, respect, let's call it what we want, between the bull that opened the group and the runners. Thus they managed to get to safety. But at the entrance to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento , the morlaco looked to his right and saw prey next to the fence. He launched a dry defeat and overwhelmed three other waiters. As if he were bowling. 28 seconds of fury that subsided there, when in Mercaderes he twinned with the rest of those from Garcigrande and gave way. In total, four seriously injured, two with gorings and two others due to trauma. Actually, the fact that they were all Navarrese is not accidental, since these first sections are fiefdom of the local runners. But the truth is that it seemed that Avenero was owed one.

Another running of the bulls from Mercaderes

From there, the closure varied. It did not lose violence and speed, but it did turbulence. At the exit of the curve of the Estafeta a small group crowded on the left sidewalk and suffered the stomping and blows of the herd, then consisting of five bulls and two halters. Behind, the last of the garcigrandes , off the hook with other oxen and less eager to reach the ring.

La Estafeta saw some of the most intense races in recent editions of the San Fermin festival. What ways to fight to search and find bull. What ways to withstand the thrust of the group and withdraw from the horns just before the catch or pure winding.

It is the most beautiful thing to see a herd configuration like this, with two bulls in front and another three a few meters behind, without being too protected by the meek. There were hard falls in the middle of the street, yes, and grabbing even among good running buddies, but with relative cleanliness.

In the corner of the Telefónica fence, the brown bull found two groups of runners, who were removed from the middle with two head blows, without injuring them.

Thus they entered the square, with a dozen seconds of advantage over the laggard garcigrande , with no intention of getting into trouble.
